News about ‘Godzilla X Kong’ Box Office

Warner Bros./Legendary’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” continues to dominate the box office in its second weekend, albeit with a slight dip in earnings compared to initial predictions. The film is estimated to earn $29-30 million in its sophomore weekend, experiencing a 63% drop from its impressive $80 million opening weekend. While some industry trackers had anticipated a slightly higher second weekend gross of $33-35 million, the film’s word-of-mouth may not be spreading as widely as hoped among casual moviegoers. Nevertheless, with a projected 10-day domestic total of $132 million, “Godzilla x Kong” is still on track to achieve a solid theatrical profit against its reported $135 million budget.

In contrast, the performance of the weekend’s newcomers is more mixed. Universal/Thunder Road’s “Monkey Man,” directed by Dev Patel in his directorial debut, secured the second spot at the box office with an estimated $10.5 million opening weekend from 3,028 screens. Originally intended for a Netflix release, the film was brought to Universal by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw production company, which acquired distribution rights for $9 million. Despite this initial cost, “Monkey Man” is expected to surpass the break-even point for Universal, especially if positive word-of-mouth among young male audiences continues to grow. The film has received generally favorable early reviews, earning a B+ CinemaScore and an 86% Rotten Tomatoes score.

However, 20th Century’s “The First Omen” hasn’t fared as well, debuting to an estimated $8 million in 3,375 theaters. Positioned against March holdovers like “Kung Fu Panda 4” and “Dune: Part Two,” the prequel to the classic 1976 horror film has struggled to maintain traction in the top 5. Despite receiving praise from critics with a 78% Rotten Tomatoes score, audience reception has been less enthusiastic, resulting in a CinemaScore of C and an early 67% audience Rotten Tomatoes score for “First Omen.”
