Track and fame can be cruel games. No one has felt that way more than American sprinter Sha'Kary Richardson over the past two years.

The 23-year-old earned gold at the World Championships in the biggest 100m race this side of the Olympics.

Her victory over Jamaican Sherika Jackson and five-time world champion Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce in 10.65 s marked her comeback after two years.

Richardson's road to the Tokyo Games was blocked by a positive test for marijuana.

Richardson said he absorbed it all, surrounded himself with supporters, tried to drown out the rest.

When Richardson was asked what message the victory sent, she said, "I would say 'Never give up.'

Never let anyone other than yourself and your beliefs define who you are. I would say 'Always fight. Whatever happens, fight.
